PROJECTS 2004: It Can Change

"There has just been a break in time"

Saturday April 24 2004
7:30 P.M. - 10:00 P.M.

I met It Can Change through their "Clothing Project" in 2002 while passing on my "the shirt that gets around" to them in a Haight St. laundromat. The shirt fit right in with their distributed artist-made clothing to people on the streets in Germany. It Can Change’s revival of the San Francisco Diggers to Gordon Matta-Clark’s ideologies further complement 667Shotwell’s and confirm it as a place for It Can Change. I am very pleased to show the first phase of It Can Change’s efforts.- Chris Sollars of 667Shotwell

There has just been a break in time.
Since 1999 we've been getting over, grinding, working construction, chopping vegetables and bumming through Guadalajara, NY, Detroit, Paris, Oakland, Miami, LA, Portland, Germany, Amsterdam, Vancouver making art shows, magazines, rapping, releasing records, distributing creativity, taking back the streets block by block, being Hammer and Throck. We went to Germany to give out clothes made by artists to people on the street, with instructions to pass them along to anyone interested in wearing them. We gave out free food in New York in front of an old restaurant, performing plays and giving out art to passersby. We rolled stuffed animal paintings around downtown San Francisco three days before Christmas. We made a band, went on tour. We walked around with boom boxes playing sound art. We put on shows in pizza parlors. We engaged some innocent bystanders, we scared others. We formed a free record label and put the records in record stores, except they were free.
We made 100 paintings and we sold them for 20 dollars to pay for some of this. We made posters that said SOMETHING MUST HAPPEN AND SOMETHING MUST BE DONE, we made things happen, we got things done.
We cooked thousands of free dinners everywhere.

On view at 667 Shotwell are the photographs, clothes, books, music, videos, pieces of paper and trash that result from our efforts. There are photographs documenting the distribution of artist-made clothing to people on the street in Germany. There are copies of zines we published as supplements to various exhibitions and street actions. There is music that we have released and clothes we made, poetry that we found, art people gave us. Books we like. There is a yellow frame that you walk through to change your frame of reference to whatever you want it to be.There are videos of puncturing reality. There are things that have never been seen before, things we encountered on our journeys that we want to show to you. There is a German magazine that we helped make, it is called "There is something I would like to show you." Won't you join us in building the world the way we want it to be and deciding what that means as we go along?
